The Personal Assistant (PA) Program at LINC serves the residents of St. Clair, Randolph, and Monroe Counties in Illinois. This program provides personal assistant referral services to persons of all ages with all types of disabilities. The goal of the Personal Assistant Program is to provide PA services that assist consumers with severe disabilities to remain in their own homes and apartments, to be as independent as possible, and to avoid institutionalization. Personal Assistant services can include but are not limited to: housework, meal preparation, bill pay, shopping, and personal care.
The Personal Assistant Program recruits, trains, and provides a referral list of PAs to those who request this program. LINC’s Personal Assistant training includes information on the Independent Living Philosophy, LINC’s role as a referring agency, consumer service plans and the duties required of a PA, as well as a review of the PA employment paperwork as required through the Division of Rehabilitation Services. Instruction is also given on a variety of disabilities, universal precautions, and communication techniques.
In addition, PA management training is available to the consumer in order to assist him or her in the role of employer of a Personal Assistant. This training is designed to improve the employer/employee relationship between the consumer and the PA. The intention is to teach consumers how to be good employers and supervisors, thus decreasing the turnover rate of Personal Assistants to consumers.
Payments to the PA come from either Division of Rehabilitation Services or are privately paid.
