LINC seeks to educate communities regarding the needs, rights, and talents of persons with disabilities. As such, our staff works diligently in the community making disability awareness presentations at area schools, businesses, and service organizations


Aging & Disability Resource Specialist

LINC Incorporated was recently awarded a grant from the National Council on Independent Living and the U.S. Administration on Aging to hire a part-time person to work as an Aging and Disability Resource Specialist (ADRS). This person will through August to further awareness of services the agency provides to seniors.

 

Some of the tasks of the ADRS include visits to senior sites in St. Clair, Monroe and Randolph counties and providing information on services, such as assistive aids, adaptive equipment and transportation assistance that are available to help older adults remain independent in their communities. Additionally, activities of the ADRS will include consulting with community members and providers about services that are needed in their respective counties in order to gauge interest about what subjects seniors would like to hear about in a series of workshops. St. Clements Bridges Program
LINC has partnered with local hospitals & rehabilitation centers to provide safety nets for patients with disabilities that experience chronic illnesses. As a result of a grant from the St. Clement Community Foundation, LINC is able to educate medical professionals, patients and their families on available FREE community based resources provided to persons with disabilities and their families before discharge. Circuit Breaker Program
LINC, Incorporated is scheduling appointments to assist persons with disabilities and seniors, 65 years old and older, complete application forms for the Circuit Breaker Pharmaceutical Assistance Program. For application assistance is provided free of charge.

Puppet Ministry

This innovative and educational method of teaching disability awareness and breaking stigmas was an overnight success. The Puppet Outreach Theater is sponsored in part by Perando Special School District. Volunteers for The Puppet Ministry are always needed. Equipment Loan Program

LINC is pleased to announce the expansion of the Equipment Loan Program to the Assistive Technology (AT) Reutilization Program. The expansion will increase access to assistive technology devices and services for people with disabilities throughout the region.

 

The AT Reutilization Program is designed to be a one-stop clearinghouse acquiring, repairing and distributing recycled durable medical equipment.  AT devices include manual wheelchairs, power wheelchairs, scooters, canes, crutches, walkers, shower chairs, toilet seats, recreational devices, seating cushions, and back supports.  The program also includes education and outreach efforts, clinical service processes, and a regional network of community collaborators.

 

AT devices are available at a low cost.  A listing of devices is obtainable online at www.paraquad.org   and by mail.  Availability of items are based on the equipment donated and may fluctuate greatly.  

 

AT devices includes manual wheelchairs, power wheelchairs, scooters, canes, crutches, walkers, shower chairs, toilet seats, recreational devices, seating cushions, and back supports. 

 

AT Donations

 We are currently seeking AT device donations from local hospitals, nursing homes, rehabilitation facilities, and private donors.  Items are transported free of charge.  In-kind AT donors will receive a letter for tax purposes. 

 

Donated AT devices are repaired and refurbished equipment under the supervision of a certified repair technician.

Home Services

Community Reintegration Program
LINC assists individuals in transition from long-term care institutions back into an independent living setting. The program includes funding to secure housing, furniture, and household goods. To qualify, you must be under the age of 59 and currently living in an institutionalized setting.

Personal Assistant Referral Service
LINC offers a Personal Assistant Referral Service for people with disabilities who need assistance at home. The individual must need help with daily living activities and require a qualified caregiver to assist them in living independently. To be eligible for a personal assistance they must qualify for DOR's Home Services and have an assessment of needs completed. Based upon the assessment hours of home services are calculated. To become a Personal Assistant (PA) a background check is required. PA's are also required to attend a personal assistant orientation and additional training if needed. Click here for a brochure.

Home Modification

LINC receives funding each year to assist homeowners with disabilities make alterations and modifications needed to get in and out of their home as well as mobility within their home.

 

The home modifications available through this program include wheelchair entrance/exit ramps, grab bars for the restrooms, raised toilets and sink modifications, roll-in showers, and in some cases doorways can be widened and new doors installed.

 

Homeowners wishing to apply for modification funding must provide proof of ownership and home insurance, proof of current property taxes paid to date or of exemption, the social security cards of everyone living in the household and verification of the total house income for 2006. This information must be readily available prior to contacting LINC about modifications.

Funding for this service is provided by Daughters of Charity Healthcare Foundation of St. Louis, the City of East St. Louis Community Development Black Grant , and St. Clair Intergovernmental Grants. LINC also collaborates with Senior Care.

Peer to Peer Counseling is an important role of Centers for Independent Living. Peer Counseling offers the opportunity for others with disabilities to meet with another individual(s)  with the same disability in a structured supportive environment.  It provides trusted allies to express yourself to others who have walked in your shoes and truly understand the stressors of having a disability. Peer to Peer Counseling is done in a confidential environment.

Peer Counseling is a FREE program, safe, and effective self-help that encourages expression of feelings and emotions.  See LINC Support Group offerings below. Individual Peer to Peer Counseling is available by contacting LINC.

Resource Room

The Resource Room is designed to provide individuals who need help with the activities of daily life an opportunity to try various products designed to assist them. The devices are also available for purchase at a low cost for individuals who need them.

 

Devices for demonstration include a portable door knob turner, large print cards, non-slip jar opener, pan holders, good grip utensils, bed pull-ups, a sign language video dictionary and portable phone amplifiers. Additionally, a variety of reference books on how to deal with disabilities and make adaptations in your life that is available.

 

The Resource Room has two computers with Internet Access available for research and to access many community and state resources for people with disabilities. Additionally, a large variety of reference books on how to deal with disabilities and make adaptations in your life are available through LINC's lending library. Books may be checked out for a two-week period.
